Whereas, Joyce (Birdie) Wyman is a native Vermonter who was born in the Bennington County community of Sunderland, and

Whereas, her early education occurred in Sunderland where she attended grades
1–8 in three different one-room schoolhouses, and

Whereas, Birdie Wyman then matriculated to Arlington High School from which she graduated, and

Whereas, she met and married another Arlington High School alumnus, James “Cricket” Wyman, who for 35 years worked for the United States Postal Service, including 20 years as the Arlington postmaster, and

Whereas, she and her late husband had four daughters, Kimberly, Dawn, Michelle, and Tamara, and Birdie is now the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, and

Whereas, Birdie Wyman’s combined interests in serving her town and participating in the formation of local public education policies led to her standing for election to the Arlington school board on which she served from 1975 to 1983, and

Whereas, her community concerns broadened beyond the school system, and in 1983, she ran successfully for the position of Arlington town clerk and proved extremely adept at overseeing the daily business of town government, and

Whereas, Birdie Wyman earned the respect of both the local citizenry and her colleagues in other town halls across the state, and

Whereas, her talents in the field of public administration were applied on the state level while she served from 2002 to 2004 as the Bennington County representative to the Vermont fish and wildlife board, and

Whereas, she has served as a role model and mentor for others interested in serving in elected and appointed public office, and

Whereas, after 23 years of service as Arlington’s reliable and respected town clerk, Birdie Wyman concluded her nearly 32-year public service career on December 31, 2006 and looks forward to spending more time with her daughters and granddaughters, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Joyce Wyman for her local and state public service and extends best wishes to her as she embarks on new endeavors, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Joyce Wyman in Arlington.
