Whereas, in 1957, IBM established a plant in Essex Junction (IBM Vermont), and in 2007, this development and production facility is the largest private industrial employer in the state, and

Whereas, IBM Vermont is a leading development center for microtechnology and produces microchips for some of the most prominent computer, communications, and consumer manufacturers, and

Whereas, many significant thresholds in the expansion of memory chips’ capacity were realized at IBM Vermont, and

Whereas, IBM Vermont produced the microprocessor for IBM’s Deep Blue computer that defeated chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov, and

Whereas, space and interplanetary exploration, including NASA’s Apollo, Mars Rover, and Pathfinder programs, have each benefited from technology developed at IBM Vermont, and

Whereas, in 2005, the National Medal of Technology was awarded to IBM Vermont in recognition of its advances in semiconductor technology, and

Whereas, this technologically innovative manufacturing facility is a major reason why, for the past decade, IBM has been the leader in the securing of United States patents, and

Whereas, IBM Vermont has a major fiscal impact in the state of Vermont, including its payment of in excess of $6 million in property taxes and the facility’s $300 million payroll, and

Whereas, in the past decade, Vermont’s K-12 schools have benefited greatly from IBM Vermont’s generous donation of more than $3.5 million in technology, cash, and services, and

Whereas, IBM Vermont is a great community citizen as annually it donates more than $500,000 for employee and retiree donations to numerous nonprofit organizations in the cultural, educational, environmental, and health care fields, and its employees and retirees volunteer thousands of hours of invaluable community service, and

Whereas, the commitment of IBM Vermont to energy conservation and a better environment are demonstrated through its annual energy savings that are equivalent to the power usage of 2,000 single-family homes, and through its receipt of several environmental awards, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is pleased to congratulate IBM as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Essex Junction manufacturing facility, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Jeff Couture at IBM in Essex Junction.
