NO. R-48.  House concurrent resolution congratulating Verna May (Long) Evarts on her 100th birthday.

Whereas, Verna May Evarts is much admired in Vergennes as both a former high school teacher and still vibrant community member, and

Whereas, in 1929, when women earning college degrees was not common, she graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania with a major in English and a minor in French, and

Whereas, after college graduation, she became a school teacher in Delaware and taught English for seven years, and

Whereas, Verna May Long was married to Lloyd Evarts, now deceased, and

Whereas, they raised two sons, and she is the grandmother of several grandchildren, and

Whereas, having relocated to Vermont, in 1953, Verna May Evarts resumed her teaching career accepting a faculty position at Vergennes High School as both an English instructor and school librarian for the annual salary of $2,800.00, and

Whereas, for the next 19 years, until her retirement in 1972, Verna May Evarts became know to a generation of students as an outstanding teacher, and

Whereas, she was a faculty member when the school moved to its current location and later when its name was changed to Vergennes Union High School, and

Whereas, aside from her scholastic duties, she has been a devoted parishioner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Vergennes and extremely active in the Order of the Eastern Star, and

Whereas, Verna May Evarts always has a kind word for everyone and is truly a community treasure, and

Whereas, on Monday, February 5, Verna May Evarts will reach a momentous personal milestone when she celebrates her 100th birthday, and

Whereas, her 100th birthday will be a special occasion in the city of Vergennes, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Verna May (Long) Evarts as she celebrates her 100th birthday, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Verna May Evarts in Vergennes.
