     Whereas, Representative Clinton Martin was a strong individual whose life was devoted in large measure to the citizens and especially the children of Springfield, and

     Whereas, a native of Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from St. Bonaventure University, earned a master’s degree in recreation administration from New York University, and served as a U.S. Army military policeman in Germany, and

     Whereas, Clint Martin served as the parks and assistant recreation director in North Hempstead, New York where he also sat on the local town council, and

     Whereas, after moving his family to Vermont, his distinguished and memorable tenure as the town of Springfield’s director of parks, recreation and leisure services commenced in 1974 and continued until his retirement in 2001, and

     Whereas, under his able leadership, Springfield’s recreational programs, which he defended passionately, became a model for other Vermont communities, and

     Whereas, Clint Martin’s interest in youth programs led him to serve as a 4-H leader and as president of the Vermont Basketball Officials Association, and

     Whereas, his community leadership took many other forms, including his service as president of the Three River Valley Business-Education Partnership, the Windsor County Agricultural Fair, the Precision Valley Development Corporation, and the Vermont Beef Producers Association, which elected him to serve as its leader, based on his broad experience as a cattle judge, and

     Whereas, Clint Martin volunteered his auctioneering talents on behalf of charitable organizations, and he was an active communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Springfield, and

     Whereas, starting in November 2002, the citizens of Springfield demonstrated great discernment when they elected Clint Martin to represent them in the Vermont House of Representatives, where he exercised wise judgment and befriended colleagues of all political persuasions, and

     Whereas, after being diagnosed in 2006 with cancer, Representative Martin fought bravely and anticipated returning to Montpelier in January 2007 to begin his third term in the House, and

     Whereas, the citizens of Springfield and the members of the General Assembly were among those saddened to learn of Representative Martin’s death on December 17, and

     Whereas, the thoughts of the General Assembly are with Representative Martin’s wife Cynthia, their children, Mark, Daniel, David, and Jessica, their six grandchildren, and other family members, now therefore be it

     Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

     That the General Assembly expresses its profound condolences to the family of Representative Clinton Martin of Springfield, and be it further

     Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Cynthia Martin in Springfield.
