ACT NO. 173
Crime victims; compensation to victims of crime
This act makes a number of changes related to compensation for crime victims. The act:
(1) expands the definition of victim to allow a person who is injured or killed as the result of a crime committed outside of the United States to be eligible for compensation;
(2) allows the Victims Compensation Board to reimburse health care facilities and providers at 70 percent of the billed charges for compensation claims for uninsured crime victims who do not qualify for the hospitals patient assistance program, Medicaid, or Medicare;
(3) prohibits a health care provider from conducting debt collection activities related to treatment provided to a crime victim until an award is made; and
(4) requires the state to bear the costs of mental health examinations for victims of sexual assaults.
Effective Date: July 1, 2008.
