ACT NO. 166
Palliative care; end-of-life care; pain management
This act creates a legislative study committee on palliative care, end-of-life care, and pain management. It requires the study committee to collaborate with several state agencies and stakeholder groups to discuss and make recommendations on legislative and nonlegislative solutions for improving palliative care, end-of-life care, pain management, and access to these services for children. The act directs the study committee to consider (1) recommendations for improving ongoing coordination of activities based on available data and studies from existing sources; (2) how best to protect the interests of people with a terminal illness or who are receiving hospice care or suffering chronic pain; (3) how to advance the goal of improving health care services for children with painful or life-threatening medical conditions; (4) recommendations for improving methods of informing consumers about options in Vermont for end-of-life care, palliative care, and management of chronic pain, and about the importance of having an advance directive; and (5) any other issue the study committee determines to be necessary and appropriate.
The act requires the study committee to provide a written report on its findings and recommendations by January 15, 2009.
Effective Date: July 1, 2008.
