Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R.  147

House concurrent resolution congratulating Vermont Girls on the Run on its fifth anniversary

Offered by:  Representatives O’Donnell of Vernon, Morrissey of Bennington, Obuchowski of Rockingham, Partridge of Windham and Pillsbury of Brattleboro

Whereas, in 1993, in order to instill the importance of physical fitness and personal self esteem in young girls, Molly Barker, a school teacher and counselor as well as a veteran champion runner, established Girls on the Run in Charlotte, North Carolina, and

Whereas, Girls on the Run is a program for girls in grades three through five that stresses self-confidence, exercise, healthy living, respect, and responsibility, and

Whereas, the program’s goals for each girl are to “have a stronger sense of identity; learn to stand up for herself in a healthy manner; learn the advantages of peer group support; have an improved body image; understand her place in the community; and complete a 5k run-walk event,” and

Whereas, the program is divided into three chronological sections, the first of which focuses on the girls examining their values and goals, the second of which develops team building among the participating girls, and the last of which includes a community service project, and

Whereas, while the instructional and personal growth aspects of the program are underway, the girls learn to run and practice for a five-kilometer run or walk event, which is the highlight of the Girls on the Run schedule, and

Whereas, in 2000, Vernon resident and marathoner Nancy Heydinger introduced Girls on the Run in Vermont with a small group of just 15 young girls, and

Whereas, in 2005, an estimated 1,500 girls at 40 school sites across the state will participate in the now formally established Vermont Girls on the Run, and

Whereas, the Governor’s Fit and Healthy Campaign has donated $10,000.00 to Vermont Girls on the Run to help underwrite the program’s costs, and

Whereas, there will be two 5k events this year, the first of which, on May 21 at Brattleboro Union High for students in southern Vermont will also serve as a fundraiser for the March of Dimes, and the second of which, for northern Vermont students, will take place in Charlotte, and

Whereas, each event is expected to attract approximately 600 runners or walkers and 75 volunteers, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Vermont Girls on the Run on its fifth anniversary and recognizes the important contribution it is making to the lives of young girls, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Nancy Heydinger in Vernon.
