Joint Concurrent House Resolution


H.C.R.  140

House concurrent resolution congratulating Robert “Bob” Ashton on his induction into the Vermont Principals’ Association Hall of Fame

Offered by:  Representatives Parent of St. Albans City, Keenan of St. Albans City, Allard of St. Albans Town and Howrigan of Fairfield

Whereas, in 2003, the Vermont Principals’ Association (VPA) established the VPA Hall of Fame to honor individuals who have contributed significantly to the development and vitality of interscholastic athletics in Vermont, and

Whereas, Bob Ashton graduated from BFA-St. Albans in 1952 and then attended Norwich University, served as a United States Air Force pilot, earned his college degree at the University of Vermont, and in 1960, commenced his career as a classroom teacher, coach, and academic and athletic administrator at his alma mater, and

Whereas, during his entire tenure at BFA-St. Albans, he was a member of the English department faculty, and for 10 years, he served as departmental chair, and

Whereas, beyond the classroom, Bob Ashton’s coaching duties were varied  and included baseball, basketball, football, track, and once, on an interim basis, he took charge of the school’s field hockey team, and

Whereas, for the decade from 1977 to 1987, he served as the BFA‑St. Albans athletic director and made significant contributions to interscholastic athletics both at his own school and throughout the state, and

Whereas, at home in St. Albans, he was a significant player in the Collins‑Perley sports complex’s creation, and

Whereas, beyond his Franklin County community, Bob Ashton’s legacy to high school sports includes the formation of the Vermont Athletic Director’s Association (VADA) and the initial publication of basketball, hockey, and wrestling guides for each sport’s respective state tournament, and

Whereas, in recognition of his superb leadership on VADA’s behalf, the association presented Bob Ashton its Bob Pierce Award, and

Whereas, aside from his school‑related academic and athletic duties, he coached in the local midget hockey program for many years, and

Whereas, although he retired from BFA-St. Albans’ faculty in the year  2000, Bob Ashton still maintains his school ties as a substitute teacher, and

Whereas, based on Bob Ashton’s impressive record of accomplishment as a high school sports administrator, he has been selected as a 2005 inductee into the VPA’s Hall of Fame in the administrator category, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Robert “Bob” Ashton on his induction into the Vermont Principals’ Association Hall of Fame, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Robert Ashton in St. Albans.
