Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R. 78

House concurrent resolution honoring Arlo K. Sterner for his outstanding service as a firefighter in Lamoille County

Offered by:  Representatives Martin of Wolcott and Smith of Morristown

Offered by:  Senators Bartlett, Illuzzi and Starr

Whereas, firefighting is a public service of the highest order, and its practitioners are individuals whom Vermonters rely upon at unexpected and often frightening moments, and

Whereas, Arlo Sterner has been involved in various aspects of fire prevention since 1956 when he joined the Morrisville Fire Department, and his outstanding level of performance resulted in his rising through the ranks and being appointed first assistant chief in 1973, and

Whereas, in 1974, he completed the United States Fire Administration’s instructor’s course and has since taught firefighting classes throughout the state, and

Whereas, on moving to Wolcott, and temporarily leaving the Morrisville Fire Department, Arlo Sterner was instrumental in establishing that community’s volunteer fire department and continues to respond to its calls, and

Whereas, in 1986, he returned to the Morrisville Fire Department to serve as the engine captain and safety officer, and

Whereas, in January 2005, Arlo Skinner retired from full‑time status and concluded a 37‑year record of superb service as a Morrisville firefighter, and

Whereas, although retired from the department, he has continued to lend a valued helping hand, both as a watchdog of the department’s equipment and as a valued substitute during the current engine captain’s National Guard deployment, and

Whereas, the citizens of Lamoille County have been extremely fortunate to have been the beneficiaries of Arlo Sterner’s firefighting expertise, as have the firefighters elsewhere in the state who have enrolled in classes he has taught, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Arlo K. Sterner for his outstanding service as a firefighter in Lamoille County, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Arlo Sterner in Wolcott.
