House of Representatives

Montpelier, Vermont

Joint Concurrent House Resolution

H.C.R. 65

House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2005 Bellows Free Academy-St. Albans Comets Division I championship girls’ ice hockey team

Offered by:  Representatives Keenan of St. Albans City, Parent of St. Albans City, Allard of St. Albans Town and Howrigan of Fairfield

Offered by:  Senators Collins and Kittell

Whereas, the Bellows Free Academy (BFA)-St. Albans Comets and Division I championship girls’ ice hockey in Vermont have been synonymous since 2002, and despite the graduation of 11 seniors in 2004, the thrice‑defending champions proved as adroit on the ice as their predecessors, and

Whereas, in the series’ semifinal game against second-seeded Spaulding High School, fifth-seeded BFA-St. Albans bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit to emerge triumphantly at the game’s conclusion by a victorious 4-1 margin, and

Whereas, the Division I championship game at Norwich University’s Kreitzberg Arena matched the Comets against second‑seeded Essex, and BFA‑St. Albans always held the lead, and

Whereas, in the final seconds of a first‑period Comet 5-3 power play advantage, Ashley Whitehouse scored the first of three goals for the defending champions, and

Whereas, early in the third period, following a scoreless second period, BFA’s Kristin Viens slammed a goal into the net, and despite a subsequent Essex score, reducing the Comets’ lead to 2-1, a late period Caitlin Manahan goal provided BFA-St. Albans a 3-1 game victory and an amazing fourth consecutive Division I title, and

Whereas, a highlight of this memorable season finale was senior goalie Sarah Manahan’s stunning 17‑save defensive performance, and

Whereas, the entire Comet roster, consisting of Meagan Fitzgerald, Jenna Bushey, Kristin Viens, Hillary Berno, Caitlin Manahan, Faith Howrigan,  Sydney McGuire, Danielle Roberts, Maggie Piaseczny, Stephanie Bourbeau,  Erica Robertson, Amanda Choiniere, Ashley Whitehouse, Betsy Viens, Meghan Jaird, Celey Schumer, and Sarah Manahan, all of whom appreciate the support of team manager Amelia Palmer, deserves credit for its school’s retention of the championship crown, and

Whereas, Head Coach Luke Cioffi, and assistant coaches Jeff Rouleau and Jeff Moulton proved once again the benefit of their intricate knowledge of the game, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the Bellows Free Academy‑St. Albans 2005 Comets Division I championship girls’ ice hockey team on winning their fourth consecutive state title, and be it further

Resolved:  That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Luke Cioffi at Bellows Free Academy-St. Albans.
