House concurrent resolution honoring Paul West on the 50th anniversary of his Woodstock law enforcement career

Whereas, Paul West graduated from Woodstock High School in 1943, establishing a presence in the community that has endured ever since, and

Whereas, after honorable service in the United States Army, this native son returned to the Green Mountain State and settled in Woodstock where he lives today with his wife, Barbara, and

Whereas, Paul is a parent and a grandparent, and

Whereas, Paul West’s business ventures included a car dealership in Woodstock village that he operated for many years, and

Whereas, he is an expert on matters related to canines having:  owned a boarding kennel; been licensed as the first professional dog handler in Vermont; taught dog obedience classes; bred various breeds of dogs; brought the American Kennel Club Dog Show to Woodstock, and exhibited dogs on the circuit, culminating in the famous Westminster Dog Show and in Madison Square Garden, and

Whereas, while these professional and personal activities have been significant in Paul West’s busy life, his most important role from the perspective of his fellow citizens in Windsor County’s shire town is as a municipal law enforcement officer, and

Whereas, he began performing law enforcement duties in 1955, and

Whereas, in 1957, the Woodstock Selectboard entrusted Paul West with the responsibilities of serving as a municipal law enforcement officer when it appointed him a constable, and

Whereas, he stood for election when the appointed term expired, and since then for reelection, always achieving a comfortable margin of victory, and

Whereas, Paul West has served his community with dedication and distinction, always ready to lend a helping hand and smiling along the way, and

Whereas, in addition to traditional law enforcement duties, he drove the local school bus for 40 years, and when he retired from sitting behind the wheel of the big yellow bus, students and parents gave him a surprise rousing thank you, and

Whereas, plowing the long entrance way at Woodstock Union High School on snowy days has remained part of Paul West’s regular schedule, and

Whereas, he has met successfully the challenges of providing law enforcement services in an increasingly bustling town, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Paul West on the 50th anniversary of his Woodstock law enforcement career, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Paul West in Woodstock.
