House concurrent resolution congratulating Saint Michael’s College on the occasion of the college’s centennial anniversary

Offered by:  Representatives Condon of Colchester, Allaire of Rutland City, Atkins of Winooski, Brennan of Colchester, Canfield of Fair Haven, Cross of Winooski, Donovan of Burlington, Dunsmore of Georgia, Keenan of St. Albans City, Kitzmiller of Montpelier, Marcotte of Coventry, Martin of Springfield, McCullough of Williston, McFaun of Barre Town, Molloy of Arlington, Morrissey of Bennington, Myers of Essex, Niquette of Colchester, Potter of Clarendon, Pugh of S. Burlington, Severance of Colchester, Shand of Weathersfield, Trombley of Grand Isle, Wright of Burlington and Young of Orwell

Whereas, Saint Michael’s College is one of Vermont’s leading institutions of higher education, and

Whereas, the Society of St. Edmund opened the doors to Saint Michael’s Institute in Colchester on September 14, 1904 and welcomed an initial class of 35 students, and

Whereas, on February 28, 1913, the governor signed Act No. 358, incorporating “St. Michael’s College, for the purpose of maintaining instruction in the various branches of learning generally taught in colleges,” and

Whereas, a strong commitment to high-quality academic excellence and careful planning helped Saint Michael’s College steadily expand its enrollment, campus, and reputation, and

Whereas, Saint Michael’s College has contributed greatly to the academic, artistic, athletic, and religious heritage of Vermont, and

Whereas, Saint Michael’s College has been in the forefront of liberal arts curriculum, international studies, graduate programs, and adult learning programs, and

Whereas, U.S. News & World Report’s ranking the college in the top tier of the best universities for the 15th consecutive year and Phi Beta Kappa’s recent vote to invite the college to form a chapter of this prestigious honor society are the most recent examples of its selection as one of the nation’s finest private colleges, and

Whereas, Saint Michael's College has instilled in its students a commitment to public service, exemplified in its fire and rescue squads and other student volunteer programs, and

Whereas, Saint Michael’s College’s centennial anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to recognize this outstanding academic institution, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Saint Michael’s College on the occasion of its centennial anniversary, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Saint Michael’s College Centennial Committee.
