House concurrent resolution in memory of Vermont National Guard Sergeant Kevin F. Sheehan of Milton

Offered by:  All Members of the House

Whereas, the members of the Vermont National Guard provide valiant service to our state in times of natural disaster and civil unrest, and to our nation during national emergencies and when international military commitments arise, and

Whereas, members of the 1st Battalion, 86th Artillery of the Vermont National Guard have been activated to serve as part of our nation’s armed forces serving in Iraq, and

Whereas, in the last week of May 2004, Sgt. Kevin Sheehan, a native of Springfield, and since 1998 a Milton resident, was killed in the line of duty when mortar fire struck him during a mission escorting members of an intelligence unit, and

Whereas, his death, and the simultaneous death of a fellow Vermonter from the same battalion, marked the first fatality incident under hostile fire involving members of the Vermont National Guard since at least the Korean conflict in the 1950s, and

Whereas, Kevin Sheehan had been a member of the Vermont National Guard for 13 years and was the recipient of many commendations, and

Whereas, Kevin Sheehan was a 1986 graduate of Springfield High School and had played both varsity basketball and football as a student, and

Whereas, he was remembered by former high school faculty as an athlete who served as a good role model for others, and

Whereas, Kevin Sheehan graduated from Vermont Technical College in 1990 and was a civil engineer who helped design the veterans’ memorial in Essex Junction, and

Whereas, he was an avid hockey player and served as an assistant coach for the Milton Youth Hockey Association, and

Whereas, Kevin Sheehan was married to Heather Sheehan, and they were the parents of two children, Nathaniel and Alyson, and he is survived by three sisters, Kathleen, Karleen, and Karen, and a brother, Keith, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly expresses its sincere condolences to the family of Sgt. Kevin F. Sheehan of Milton, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Heather Sheehan in Milton, Kathleen Stern in Springfield, Keith Sheehan in Springfield, Karen Sheehan in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Karleen Cass in Springfield.
