House concurrent resolution in memory of Vermont National Guard Sergeant Jamie Gray of East Montpelier

Whereas, the members of the Vermont National Guard provide valiant service to our state in times of natural disaster and civil unrest and to our nation during national emergencies and when international military commitments arise, and

Whereas, members of the 1st Battalion, 86th Field Artillery of the Vermont National Guard have been activated to serve as part of our nation’s armed forces serving in Iraq, and

Whereas, on Monday, June 7, 2004, Sergeant Jamie Gray of East Montpelier, a member of the 1st Battalion, 86th Field Artillery, perished when a roadside bomb exploded as the Humvee he was driving passed by the explosive’s location, and

Whereas, he graduated from U-32 High School where he was instrumental in establishing the school’s football team which has since won several Class IV state championships, and

Whereas, after graduation he was employed as a mechanic at a local automotive dealership, and

Whereas, Jamie Gray was a 10-year veteran of the Vermont National Guard and had previously served on active duty, and

Whereas, his Vermont roots run very deep as his family has resided in East Calais for seven generations, and

Whereas, on the East Calais land that he knew and loved, and that has belonged to the Gray family for those many decades, his friends, family, and many dignitaries gathered to pay tribute to Jamie Gray and to bury him among his forbears, and

Whereas, Jamie Gray will be remembered as an individual who wished simply to enable others to enjoy the kind of life surrounded by nature, love, and peace that he had cherished, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Jamie Gray who died on the field of battle, and be it further

 

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to his father, Stephen Gray.
