Subject: Education; budget votes
Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to stipulate that when a school district budget is voted by Australian ballot, it shall include an option to adopt the previous year’s budget increased by the Consumer Price Index.
AN ACT RELATING TO AN OPTION TO VOTE TO INCREASE AN ANNUAL SCHOOL BUDGET BY THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX
It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
Sec. 1. 16 V.S.A. § 428(b) is amended to read:
(b) If the electorate of a school district votes for its budget by Australian ballot, it shall do so using ballot language jointly developed by the commissioner and secretary of state and adopted by the commissioner, by rule. The language shall include three options as follows:
(1) An option to accept the budget proposed by the school board.
(2) An option to reject the budget proposed by the school board.
(3) An option to adopt a budget which is equal to the previous year’s budget increased by the most recent Consumer Price Index.
