Statement of purpose:  This bill proposes to require that no purchaser of certified organic produce in Vermont shall demand that a Vermont certified organic farmer exceed the National Organic Program Standards without the purchaser paying a premium and stipulating in a contract what provisions will be made if the stricter standard is not met through no fault of the Vermont organic producer.

AN ACT RELATING TO PRODUCTS FROM CERTIFIED ORGANIC FARMS AND BUSINESSES

It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:


Sec. 1.  6 V.S.A. § 183 is added to read:

§ 183.  PURCHASERS OF VERMONT CERTIFIED ORGANIC PRODUCE

No Vermont purchasers of certified organic produce produced in Vermont shall demand that a Vermont certified organic farm exceed the National Organic Program Standards without the purchaser paying a premium and stipulating in a contract what provisions will be made if the stricter standard is not met through no fault of the Vermont certified organic farm.
