Statement of purpose: This bill proposes to compensate fire departments and rescue squads, whether paid or volunteer, $50.00 for responding to a call on a state or interstate highway.
AN ACT RELATING TO COMPENSATING FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND RESCUE SQUADS FOR RESPONDING TO HIGHWAY EMERGENCIES
It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont:
Sec. 1. 20 V.S.A. § 2963a is added to read:
§ 2963a. FIRE DEPARTMENTS; RESCUE SQUADS; COMPENSATION
FOR RESPONDING TO HIGHWAY EMERGENCIES
(a) Each volunteer fire department, paid fire department, and volunteer rescue squad which responds to an emergency motor vehicle call on a state or interstate highway shall be paid $50.00 per call, unless reimbursed by insurance.
(b) The administrative officer of a fire department, fire district, water district, or rescue organization that is eligible for the payment under this section shall complete a compensation form, as determined by the state treasurer, and attach a signed copy of the department incident report. Upon receipt of a completed payment authorization form signed by the administrative officer, the state treasurer shall issue a warrant for the commissioner of finance and management to make the payment authorized in subsection (a) of this section. No organization shall receive compensation in excess of $500.00 in any fiscal year.
