Whereas, the quality of his writing caught the eye of the Burlington Free Press’ sportswriter, Bish Bishop, who hired Don Fillion to work for the larger metropolitan paper with its broader reporting opportunities, and
Whereas, Don Fillion’s move to Vermont’s largest newspaper inaugurated a three-decade career at the Free Press where he developed a reputation as one of the state’s premier sports’ journalists and as an extremely effective writer, and
Whereas, although he covered many sporting events in his stories and popular column, and was especially well known as an auto racing reporter and for his coverage of UVM athletics, he maintained a continuing commitment to report on the state’s high school sporting scene, and

Whereas, notwithstanding the challenges of parents’ and coaches’ criticisms, and the long and difficult hours, Don Fillion liked covering high school sports more than any other assignment because the communities really cared about the teams, and
Whereas, as a reporter and columnist at the Free Press, he mentored younger aspiring sports journalists, allowing them to cover a game and prove their capabilities, and he was known among his colleagues as a dedicated workaholic, and
Whereas, although Don Fillion has retired to Montgomery, he continues to cover high school sporting events in Franklin County for the St. Albans Messenger, and
Whereas, despite Don’s protestations that he was only doing his job, the VPA has selected him as a 2005 inductee for the organization’s hall of fame, now therefore be it
