NO. R-222.  HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Joyce Held and Sandra Brookner, the cofounders of the Oak Hill Children’s Center in Pownal.

Offered by:  Representatives Morrissey of Bennington, Botzow of Pownal, Corcoran of Bennington, Krawczyk of Bennington and Mook of Bennington.

Whereas, in 1972, when child care services were not as common as they are today, two VISTA volunteers, Joyce Held and Sandra Brookner, established the Oak Hill Children’s Center in Pownal, and

Whereas, from its inception, the center has been dedicated to providing early education programs for the families of Pownal, and

Whereas, the center was originally located in the historic Oak Hill school building, and

Whereas, these two early childhood educators taught during the week, and on the weekends, chopped wood and conducted fundraising events in support of the center, and

Whereas, after they concluded their Vista terms of service, Joyce Held and Sandra Brookner remained intimately involved in the Oak Hill Children’s Center’s programs and operations, and

Whereas, their Vista project of three decades ago has blossomed into a much admired child care facility, and

Whereas, in September 2003, the Oak Hill Children’s Center opened its new headquarters in the former Storey Communications building in Pownal, and

Whereas, the center’s proximity to both the Pownal Elementary School and the Pownal branch of Head Start facilitates the close collaboration among these three early childhood educational institutions, and

Whereas, the center is working towards obtaining accreditation from the NAEYC organization, a national accreditation system for facilities that care for and educate young children, and 

Whereas, although Joyce Held and Sandra Brookner are no longer regularly involved in the center’s programs and management, they have left a legacy of excellence that is a model for their successors, and

Whereas, the Oak Hill Children’s Center is honoring its cofounders to acknowledge, in a formal manner, their many years of dedication on behalf of Pownal’s youngest residents, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Joyce Held and Sandra Brookner in recognition of their enduring record of accomplishment at the Oak Hill Children’s Center, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Joyce Held and Sandra Brookner in Pownal.
