NO. R-130.  House concurrent resolution congratulating the Mount Mansfield Union High School 2005 Division I boys’ basketball team.

(H.C.R.83)

Offered by:  Representatives Symington of Jericho, Barnard of Richmond, Frank of Underhill, Dostis of Waterbury and Minter of Waterbury.

Whereas, the excitement of winning the Division I state championship in 2004 was so exhilarating that the Mount Mansfield Union High School Cougars boys’ basketball team decided it was an experience worth repeating, and

Whereas, the Cougars were not automatically awarded a second consecutive divisional title as they needed to battle their way through an exciting championship game at UVM’s Patrick Gym against the 21-2 Spaulding Union High School Crimson Tide season record, and

Whereas, Spaulding, which had defeated Mount Mansfield on three occasions this season, was as formidable an opponent imaginable as the Barre‑based team forced the Cougars to work every second of the game for the coveted top honors in Division I, and

Whereas, when at the end of the first quarter, the Cougars led the Crimson Tide 13-2, the Chittenden County team’s obstacles had not even appeared, and

Whereas, the second quarter proved a far more challenging period of play as the Cougars barely clung to a 15-14 lead as the halftime festivities commenced, and

Whereas, the second half continued to showcase each team’s moments of hope and disappointment as the Crimson Tide, with just 6:58 remaining in the last quarter, held the upper hand 32-27, and

Whereas, realizing that the game and championship were clearly at stake, the Cougars ignited for a 16-3 scoring run, including 10 points from the game’s top scorer, Matt Glass, resulting in a 43-35 Mount Mansfield lead that nearly matched the final 43-37 result, and

Whereas, the contributions of seniors Mike Filipek, Luke Ehinger, Andrew Gallagher, Ben Vogelzang, and Nmoemeka Ekwuabu will be especially missed in future Mount Mansfield High School seasons, and

Whereas, Cougars Sam Saks, Mike Filipek, Tim MacDonnell, Luke Ehinger, Eli Keller, Sam Lacy, Matt Godek, Ben Vogelzang, Nmoemeka Ekwuabu, A.J. Bugbee, Mike Kreigh, Andrew Gallagher, and Matt Glass all contributed to the championship win through a season of hard work and team building, and

Whereas, team managers Katherine Towers and Laura Pantaline assisted with team statistics during every game, and

Whereas, Coach Jeff Davis exhibited great leadership skill throughout the season, and

Whereas, assistant coaches Jeff Brown and Jason Pecor provided additional support and training to the team, and

Whereas, athletic trainer Amanda Cowan assisted team members in maintaining healthy bodies and repairing sprained ankles and other injuries, and

Whereas, Dorothy Kuerth, Director of the Mount Mansfield Union Learning Lab, offered regular support and encouragement not just to the players, but also to their families, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the Mount Mansfield Union High School 2005 Division I boys’ basketball team, and be it further
