Whereas, Margaret Lillie of Pownal, a sixth generation Vermonter, has served her town, county, state, and nation in pioneering capacities during a stellar career of public and community service, and

Whereas, she developed an affinity for learning early in life while a student at the Maple Grove School in Pownal, and 

Whereas, as a result of having graduated first in her high school class, she earned a scholarship to attend the University of Vermont where she earned her undergraduate degree in 1944, and

Whereas, lacking the funds to pursue her career goal of a legal education, Margaret Lillie availed herself of the new wartime military service opportunities opened to women, and their attendant post service education benefits, and enlisted in the Navy as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), and

Whereas, following her military tour of duty at Quonset Naval Air Station in Rhode Island, and several years of employment at Bennington College, she enrolled at Boston College Law School, and not at all surprisingly, graduated first in her class, and

Whereas, in 1956, after clerking and practicing for several years as a junior attorney in a private law office, Margaret Lillie accepted the challenge to stand for election as Bennington County State’s Attorney, becoming only the second woman in Vermont to be elected a state’s attorney, and

Whereas, for six years, she served as the county’s sole prosecutor litigating on the state’s behalf with considerable success, and

Whereas, in 1961, Margaret Lillie was elected Bennington County Probate Judge and spent the next 13 years presiding over the disposition of the county’s estates, and

Whereas, since 1974, her legal skills have been applied to the general practice of law, first in Bennington, and since 2000, from a Pownal office in one of the town’s oldest residential structures, and

Whereas, Margaret Lillie was instrumental in the establishment of the Pownal Race Track in the early 1960s and the Pownal Historical Society in 1994, on whose board of directors she continues to serve, and

Whereas, from 1974 until this year, Margaret Lillie has served as Pownal Town Agent, and while she is concluding that tenure this year, she is retiring neither from the practice of law, which she continues to enjoy, nor from her favorite athletic pastime, downhill skiing, and

Whereas, she will be honored at a meeting of the Pownal Historical Society on April 10, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly honors Margaret Elizabeth Lillie for her many years of public and community service, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Margaret Lillie in Pownal and to the Pownal Historical Society.
