NO. R-116. House concurrent resolution congratulating Jacob Hubbard on winning the 2005 Vermont state spelling bee.

Whereas, spelling is an academic subject that most students start when entering the first grade, and
Whereas, a special group of students considers learning to spell new words an exciting challenge comparable to playing a favorite game, and
Whereas, for students in grades five through eight who revel in broadening the breadth of their spelling knowledge, there is the Vermont state spelling bee, conducted under the auspices of the historic cosponsors: the department of education, the Vermont Principals’ Association, and the Vermont Humanities Council; and, in 2005, the additional cosponsorship of the Burlington Free Press, and
Whereas, the 20 student contestants at the 2005 Vermont state spelling bee, held at Northfield High School, gained admission to this gathering of young alphabet connoisseurs by winning regional bees, and
Whereas, the young contestants were required to spell correctly words such as dactylion, ostetic, and propinquity, and
Whereas, in the final exciting round, Jacob Hubbard, an 8th grader at Rochester Middle School, outlasted his last challenger when he spelled correctly tilde and vermin, and
Whereas, his role as this year’s Vermont state spelling bee champion has assumed special significance as he will be the first Vermonter since the 1930s, due to the state bee’s addition of a daily newspaper cosponsor, to participate in the nationally televised Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C., and
Whereas, Jacob and his teachers at Rochester Middle School can be extremely proud of his stellar academic achievement, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates Jacob Hubbard on winning the 2005 Vermont state spelling bee and wishes him the best of luck at this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, and be it further
Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Jacob Hubbard at Rochester Middle School.
