Whereas, Jesse Strong’s life was closely tied to the state of Vermont and his home town of Albany, and
Whereas, his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Nathan Strong, home schooled Jesse, and he then earned his college degree at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and
Whereas, while attending the university, Jesse Strong held a number of student leadership roles, and
Whereas, subsequent to his graduation, he had enrolled at a seminary to pursue religious studies, and he had completed one semester, and
Whereas, aside from his academic work, Jesse Strong had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, believing he had a duty to defend and protect his nation, and he had advanced to the rank of sergeant, and
Whereas, after completing one semester of his religious studies, his Marine Corps’ unit, Company C, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, was activated and deployed to Iraq in August 2004, and
Whereas, in Iraq, Company C was assigned the task of searching for weapons caches, sweeping roads for explosives, and building fighting positions, and
Whereas, on Wednesday, January 26, Sgt. Strong’s Marine convoy was ambushed when it was leaving the Iraqi town of Haditha, and
Whereas, a rocket‑propelled grenade hit a vehicle killing four Marines, including Sgt. Jesse Strong, and
Whereas, Sgt. Strong’s death has brought great sadness to his parents, his brother and sister, the town of Albany, which is a small and closely knit community, the neighboring towns, and the entire state of Vermont, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly extends its sincere sympathies to the family of U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Jesse Strong of Albany, and be it further
Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Rev. and Mrs. Nathan Strong in Albany.
