NO. R-23.  House concurrent resolution congratulating Smead Woodcraft on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

(H.C.R.8)

Offered by:  Representatives Obuchowski of Rockingham, Darrow of Dummerston and Deen of Westminster.

Whereas, in the decades before craft fairs and stores featured a wide selection of outstanding Vermont‑made crafts, the Smead Craft Shop in Putney was creating handsome wooden cutting boards in distinctive shapes and styles and other wooden items, and

Whereas, the history of the Smead Craft Shop is unique as its founder, Hugh Smead, established the shop after polio paralyzed his legs and forced him to leave his prior work in one of the area’s local basket manufacturing plants, and

Whereas, with his wife Laurea, who served as his legs, Hugh Smead began constructing the boards as well as lamps and boxes in a workshop he had built adjacent to his home on Route 5 in Putney, and driving his car with special hand controls, began selling them to local gift shops, and

Whereas, by 1983, when Hugh retired and his sons Steve and Don assumed control of the business, the Smead Craft Shop’s annual sales had reached $250,000.00, and

Whereas, the business, renamed Smead Woodcraft, sold merchandise to both the local gift shops and to larger retailers, including L.L. Bean, Pier 1, and the QVC cable television network, and

Whereas, Hugh and his family developed an outstanding reputation among their customers, with one describing him as “the most honest man in Vermont,” and

Whereas, despite reduced activity during the late 1990s, Smead Woodcraft’s sales have rebounded in recent years, and the company is now selling its attractive products on the internet, and

Whereas, in 2004, Smead family members and friends gathered at the workshop to celebrate the business’s 50th anniversary, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Hugh Smead and his family on the occasion of Smead Woodcraft’s 50th anniversary, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Smead Woodcraft in Putney.
