ACT NO. 199

Health; insurance; divorce

This act expands the mandate for a health insurance plan to continue to cover an adult dependent child on the parent's plan. The act requires coverage for any mental or physical disability rather than the disabilities specified under prior law. The act imposes a new obligation for health insurance plans to continue covering college students for up to 24 months of a medically necessary leave of absence from school. The act also establishes a committee to study and report to the legislature on issues regarding continuing coverage under the same policy and for the former spouse of the policyholder.

The committee will also look at issues regarding continuing to cover adult children on a parent's policy in the absence of a disability or dependence on the parent.

Effective Date: July 1, 2006.
