Emergency contraception; pharmacists

This act allows a licensed pharmacist to initiate and dispense emergency contraception under a collaborative agreement with a physician or other authorized prescriber. The pharmacist is required to take a training course to be developed by the Vermont department of health (VDH) and to provide the emergency contraception in accordance with a protocol developed by VDH. The pharmacist must also provide the patient a standardized fact sheet developed by VDH that includes information concerning: indications for use of the drug, appropriate methods of use, information on sexual assault and the risks of unprotected sexual intercourse, and information on referrals to health care providers and other appropriate agencies and information.
