NO. R-118.  House concurrent resolution congratulating Claire Bohannon of Alburgh on her award-winning business “Claire’s Country Garden.”

Whereas, Claire Bohannon was raised on her family farm in Franklin, and she loved to help tend to a large vegetable garden and can the produce for winter consumption, and

Whereas, her late husband Lawrence and she settled at retirement on a 25‑acre farm in Alburgh, and to keep herself occupied, she began to create quilts and floral arrangements for craft shows, and she then added a few jars of canned vegetables to her output, and

Whereas, in 1997, her projects became a business, Claire’s Country Garden, and the farmhouse kitchen proved inadequate for the expanding operation of canning pickles, relishes, jams, and jellies, and producing gift boxes, and

Whereas, they converted a garage into a working kitchen, and

Whereas, the business was a partnership of love with her husband and they worked together in the garden and in the kitchen until his death in 2004, and

Whereas, she has continued to operate the business, inspired by her husband’s memory, and in the last few years, she has raised the profile of Claire’s Country Garden considerably through her self-marketing initiatives, and

Whereas, she now provides merchandise to 30 retail establishments in Vermont, including King Arthur Flour in Norwich and the Stowe Mercantile, and sells at the Stowe Farmer’s Market and extensively on the internet, all of which results in the sale of 15,000 jars of her products on an annual basis, and

Whereas, in a contest for small artisans, under the sponsorship of the Gallo Family Vineyard, Claire’s Country Garden was awarded a Gold Medal Award in the Outstanding Fruit and Vegetable category for her famous Dilly Bean recipe, and she received formal recognition for this achievement at an event in New York City, and

Whereas, the March 2007 issue of “Country Living Magazine” reports on Claire Bohannon in its women entrepreneurs section as part of a “feature article about women turning their artistic gifts into cottage industries,” and the  magazine is flying her to a special celebration in Chicago, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Claire Bohannon of Alburgh on her award-winning business “Claire’s Country Garden” and wishes her continuing good fortune, and be it further

Resolved:  That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Claire Bohannon in Alburgh.
