NO. R-220. House concurrent resolution congratulating Deacon Richard O’Donnell of Bellows Falls on his ordination as a Roman Catholic priest.

Whereas, Richard O’Donnell, a graduate of Bellows Falls Union High School, has prepared for nearly a decade to fulfill his life’s ambition to be ordained as a Roman Catholic priest, and
Whereas, in pursuit of this personal goal, in 1996, he enrolled in a combined undergraduate curriculum at Boston College and St. John’s Seminary, and
Whereas, in 2001, Richard O’Donnell, having been admitted to Phi Sigma Tau, the National Honor Society in Philosophy, graduated with a major in philosophy and a minor in Christian-Jewish relations, and
Whereas, as an undergraduate student, he served at several locations in the Boston area, including Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, and the Immaculate Conception Parish in Malden, Massachusetts, and
Whereas, after completing his undergraduate education, Richard O’Donnell enrolled at Mt. St. Mary’s University to pursue a master’s of divinity degree which he earned on May 6, after having been designated a Carl J. Fives Scholar in the fall of 2004, and
Whereas, as a graduate student, he served as chaplain to the Mt. St. Mary’s University baseball team, and in nearby Pennsylvania parishes, the South Mountain Restoration Center and at the university’s office of campus ministries, and
Whereas, during his graduate studies, he received two ministries, Lector in May of 2002 and Acolyte a year later, and
Whereas, in the fall of 2004, following severe hurricanes, Richard O’Donnell organized and led a group of university students on a mission trip to Jamaica, and
Whereas, in the Diocese of Burlington, in which he was ordained to the Diaconate in 2004, he served in the youth ministry program and as a master of ceremonies, and
Whereas, on Saturday, June 4, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington, Richard O’Donnell will become the only one to be ordained a priest this year in the Diocese of Burlington, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates Deacon Richard O’Donnell on his ordination as a Roman Catholic priest, and be it further
Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Deacon Richard O’Donnell at St. Charles Rectory in Bellows Falls.
