NO. R-216. House concurrent resolution honoring Liron Weiss for her lifesaving assistance during the Redstone Apartment carbon monoxide emergency.
Offered by: Representatives Brooks of Montpelier and Kitzmiller of Montpelier.
Offered by: Senator MacDonald of Orange District.
Whereas, on Saturday, January 29, 2005, a bitterly cold evening, Liron Weiss, a resident of Building 3 of the Redstone Apartments on the University of Vermont campus, contacted the building’s answering service to report a malfunctioning heating system, and
Whereas, a handyman responded to her call and attempted to repair the boiler problem, but the heat failed to return, prompting her to make a second and third call for assistance, and
Whereas, after a specially trained repairman restored the heat and had departed, the boiler misfired, resulting in an extremely dangerous carbon monoxide leak, and
Whereas, after waking up on Sunday morning, Liron Weiss began drifting in and out of consciousness and had a friend take her to the University of Vermont’s Student Health Center where she reported her concerns about the building’s heating system, and
Whereas, although she was pronounced in good physical health, the nurse practitioner who examined Liron Weiss urged her to address a perceived heating problem immediately, and
Whereas, upon returning to the building, she again felt ill, and had recurring thoughts of a carbon monoxide leak, and she called the handyman, describing the morning’s events, including the presence of a strange odor in her apartment, and
Whereas, when the handyman arrived and opened the bulkhead door to the boiler room, the odor forced him to withdraw, at which point she told him that he needed to inform the other building residents, and
Whereas, her persistence expedited, by perhaps hours, the arrival of rescue personnel and resulted in the saving of many lives, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly honors Liron Weiss for her timely and perceptive actions that resulted in the saving of many lives in Redstone Apartment Building 3 on January 30, 2005, and be it further
Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Liron Weiss.
