NO. R-164. House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2005 Harwood Union High School Highlanders Division II championship boys’ ice hockey team.
Offered by: Representatives Minter of Waterbury, Dostis of Waterbury, Donahue of Northfield, Grad of Moretown and Hosford of Waitsfield.
Offered by: Senator Cummings of Washington District, Senator Doyle of Washington District and Senator Scott of Washington District.
Whereas, the Harwood Union High School boys’ ice hockey team played to win all season long, earning the number one seed in the Division II playoff tournament, and
Whereas, in the semifinal contest, the Highlanders skated past the Woodstock Wasps to a 4-1 victory as Harwood’s Erik Poitras, Brendan VanTuinen, who was honored as the Division II player of the year, and Michael Casey scored goals for Harwood, and
Whereas, after this solid display of hockey mastery, the Highlanders faced off against third‑seeded North Country Union High School (NCU) for Division II honors, and
Whereas, in the season’s finale on the Gutterson Field House ice rink, Brendan VanTuinen scored three of the Highlanders’ four goals and assisted in scoring the fourth, and
Whereas, he opened the scoring with 47 seconds left in the first period with assistance from both Michael Casey and Nick Sisler, and
Whereas, an NCU goal at 3:53 while Harwood’s opponent had a 5-3 player advantage proved short‑lived as the Highlanders regained the lead with a VanTuinen short-handed goal less than three minutes later, and
Whereas, Highlander Tim Griffith scored a power play goal early in the final period, and VanTuinen did the same shortly thereafter, and
Whereas, despite a final NCU score, the outstanding defensive work of goalie Dan Morse prevented the tally from becoming any narrower as the Highlanders defeated NCU 4-2 and clinched the school’s first boys’ ice hockey championship in 25 years, and
Whereas, Highlanders Nick Sisler, Chad Stanclift, Keith Nelson, Shawn Thompson, Martin Casey, Brendan VanTuinen, Jonathan Grace, Michael Casey, Tim Griffith, Michael Longchamp, Nate Goss-Woliner, Mike Poitras, Ross Macleod, Erik Poitras, Will Woodard, Elliot Siegel, Chris Martin, Eric Sweet, and Dan Morse all deserve credit for Harwood’s fantastic season, and
Whereas, Head Coach Dave Morse and assistant coaches Howard Deal and Shaun Morse are each to be commended, now therefore be it
