NO. R-144. Senate concurrent resolution congratulating the Montpelier Lodge of Elks #924 on its centennial anniversary.

Whereas, since the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was established in New York City in 1868, the organization has been dedicated to “the principles of charity, justice, brotherly love, and fidelity” and the quickening of “the spirit of American patriotism,” and
Whereas, in the years following 1868, word of the conviviality and good deeds of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks spread throughout the land, including Vermont, and
Whereas, in 1904, heeding a local call for this outstanding fraternal organization to establish a presence in central Vermont, Montpelier Lodge of Elks # 924 was formed in the state’s capital city, and
Whereas, during the past century, the Montpelier lodge has engaged in many activities that exemplify the Elks’ core principles of serving others, and
Whereas, in 2005, the lodge continues its outstanding tradition of improving community life through a generous contribution of volunteer hours to many worthy projects, and
Whereas, both in Montpelier and nationwide, the Elks operates the “Hoop Shoot,” the largest coeducational sports program in the nation, an extensive college scholarship program, and a drug awareness program, and
Whereas, the Elks’ historic commitment to American patriotism is implemented through the Flag Day ceremony that the organization originated, and
Whereas, the Montpelier Elks take special pride in its support for the Vermont Elks’ Silver Towers Camp in Ripton, a one-week residential camp “for exceptional people six through seventy years” of age, and
Whereas, campers are provided the chance to enjoy personally enriching experiences and develop their social skills, and
Whereas, the members of the Montpelier lodge are proud of their community service accomplishments and are starting with great anticipation their second century, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly congratulates Montpelier Lodge of Elks # 924 on the occasion of its centennial anniversary and extends best wishes as it embarks on a second century, and be it further
Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Ilene Gillander at the Montpelier Lodge of Elks # 924.
