NO. R-205. JOINT RESOLUTION congratulating Aly Richards on her appointment to the state board of education.

Whereas, Aly Richards, a ninth grader at Oxbow Union High School in Bradford, and the daughter of Bruce and Leslie Richards, is an extraordinary young woman, and
Whereas, in discussions with her western civilization instructor Larry Coffin, she decided to submit her name for consideration as a candidate for a student seat on the state board of education, and
Whereas, Aly was one of 75 students from across Vermont who applied for this very special opportunity to be directly involved in the development of the stateís policies relating to elementary and secondary education, and
Whereas, in order to be considered for the position, she was required to complete a detailed application form and submit a writing sample, a copy of her academic transcript and written recommendations from her teachers, and
Whereas, from the initial applicant pool, 25 students were granted a preliminary interview, and
Whereas, this group was further narrowed to five finalists, each of whom, including Aly Richards, the governor personally interviewed, and
Whereas, she was in competition with a group of predominately upper class students, and
Whereas, despite the strenuous competition for this coveted position, Aly Richards, based on her exemplary academic record, breadth of extracurricular activities, strong teacher recommendations, and her comprehensive knowledge of the issues facing public education, was chosen to serve for a two-year student term on the state board, and
Whereas, during the next year, she will sit as the nonvoting junior student member of the board and will then serve her concluding year as the voting senior student member, and
Whereas, appointment as a student member to the state board of education is a position that Aly Richards will fulfill as an articulate and conscientious representative of Vermontís secondary school students, and
Whereas, her parents and teachers are very proud of her appointment to a student seat on the state board of education, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly is pleased to congratulate Aly Richards on her appointment as the first ninth grader to serve on the state board of education, which is an outstanding accomplishment, and a positive reflection on her parents, school and community, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Aly Richards at Oxbow Union High School in Bradford.
