NO. R-196. JOINT RESOLUTION honoring William M. "Bill" Austin III.

Whereas, William M. "Bill" Austin III, for over a quarter of a century, has been an outstanding civic and community leader in the town of Londonderry, and
Whereas, in 1973, Bill Austin and his family sought an alternative to the hectic urban pace of Stamford, Connecticut, and opted for the bucolic environs of Londonderry, and
Whereas, shortly after arriving in Londonderry, he enthusiastically and energetically delved into the town’s municipal and community affairs, and
Whereas, Bill Austin’s outstanding civic leadership is well documented through his 11-year tenure on the Londonderry Planning Commission, his six years serving as a town selectman, his six-year membership on the local school board, and his 20 years’, and still continuing, service as a justice of the peace, and
Whereas, he is a founding member of the local Rotary chapter, a 20-year veteran chorister with the Yankee Male Chorus, and a trustee of the South Londonderry Baptist Church, and
Whereas, without doubt, Bill Austin’s most enduring contribution to his adopted hometown is his very special association with the stupendous Londonderry 4th of July parade, and
Whereas, in 1974, he, along with Milt Stevens and Walt Jenkins, established the 4th of July parade, and
Whereas, since 1975, Bill has been the principal director of this wonderful annual display of community spirit, and has appreciated the essential and magnificent assistance of Joan Johnson, and
Whereas, under his direction, the parade has flourished and become one of the leading Independence Day celebratory events in Vermont, and
Whereas, after leading the parade for a quarter of a century, Bill Austin is passing the baton to his successor, and
Whereas, Bill is a wonderful husband to his wife Judith, and the two of them are outstanding parents to their sons, Morrie and Robert, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly is pleased to honor William M. Austin III for his many contributions as a civic leader in Londonderry, and, most particularly, for his role as the cofounder and longtime director of the Londonderry 4th of July parade, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Bill Austin in Londonderry.
