NO. R-169. JOINT RESOLUTION honoring the health education initiatives of U-32 seniors Meredith Cowart, Kaitlin Harvie and Maren Langdon.

Whereas, a considerable number of young persons, predominately women, are afflicted with anorexia, bulimia or a related eating disorder, and

Whereas, young women are often ill-informed concerning the drastic consequences which can result from their self-imposed remedies to alter their body images, and

Whereas, these young women decided to initiate an education campaign at their high school to enable their classmates to learn the facts related to eating disorders, and to facilitate a community dialogue on this important health topic, and

Whereas, these students, along with their classmates Helen Cowart, Tina DeForge, Carmel Lobello, Stevia Morton and Rosalie Kung developed innovative plans which entailed a week-long series of activities that were created in collaboration with U-32 guidance department counselor Kathy Pelletier and

Whereas, a highlight of the week’s schedule was the presentation of a film that the three young women produced, entitled "Turning Black and White" which portrayed a teenage girl’s struggle to survive a day on a diet consisting exclusively of a banana and a few spoonfuls of soup, and

Whereas, the film was written to emphasize an emotional message that would impact on the students in a manner not possible in a traditional health education presentation, and

Whereas, the week of special activities also included parental participation and dialogue, and

Whereas, the students at U-32 High School were able to gain new insight into the causes of, and possible remedies for, eating disorders, and

Whereas, this was a unique and valuable learning experience for all of the participants, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is proud to honor Meredith Cowart, Kaitlin Harvie and Maren Langdon for their insightful educational initiative on eating disorders which they jointly developed and presented at U-32 High School, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Meredith Cowart, Kaitlin Harvie and Maren Langdon at U-32 High School.
