NO. R-136. JOINT RESOLUTION designating June 7, 2001 as nursing assistant recognition day.

Whereas, approximately 3,500 Vermonters live in nursing homes, and

Whereas, these are some of our most vulnerable citizens, and

Whereas, the health and happiness of these Vermonters depends on the nursing assistants who provide almost all of the daily hands-on care, and

Whereas, nursing assistant staffing levels in Vermont nursing homes have decreased over the past three years, and

Whereas, the General Assembly is responsible for protecting its most vulnerable citizens, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly, recognizing the important role nursing assistants play in the well-being of nursing home residents, designates June 7, 2001 Nursing Assistant Recognition Day, and be it further

Resolved: That the General Assembly recognizes that nursing assistants must be paid a livable wage and be treated with dignity and respect if Vermontís most vulnerable citizens are to continue receiving the care they need, and be it further

Resolved: That the General Assembly recognizes the strong demand in Vermont for individuals who are willing to provide the important personal care services that nursing assistants offer, and urges those persons who are looking to serve others to consider a career in the nursing assistant field, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Vermont Health Care Association in Montpelier.
