NO. R-116. JOINT RESOLUTION honoring the 2000 state championship Essex American Legion baseball team.

Whereas, in the year 2000, the American Legionís national youth baseball program celebrated 75 years of competition and good sportsmanship, and

Whereas, American Legion Post 91 in Winooski is the enthusiastic sponsor of the Essex American Legion team, and

Whereas, the American Legion of Vermontís baseball program, led with great skill by Joe Murphy, provides outstanding opportunities for our stateís youth, and

Whereas, the Essex squad proved to be an outstanding group of baseball players that compiled a regular season record of 19-2, and

Whereas, the Essex team proceeded confidently into post-season play, and initially captured the Northern Division Championship with victories over the rival Champlain and Waterbury teams, and

Whereas, Essex then marched forward with its powerful bats and agile field play to win the Vermont State Championship by defeating the highly talented Southern Division Legion champion team from Brattleboro, and

Whereas, with the Vermont title secure, the Essex American Legion baseball team moved forward to the Regional Tournament in Rhode Island, where the Vermonters defeated their opponents from Warwick, Rhode Island, lead by the excellent pitching of Mike Colacchio, and in a contest against the ultimate Regional victor Hamilton, New Jersey, Essex pitcher Josh Santerreís magnificent mound performance was only scarred in the ninth inning as a Hamilton player smacked a late game home run, and

Whereas, the Essex American Legion baseball team players, including Jeff Barry, Mike Colacchio, Brian Gray, Ryan Keefe, Brent Jurkiewicz, John Mack, Paul Morgan, Patrick OíNeil, Tyler Sadler, Josh Santerre and Eric Yeager of Essex High School, Jason Metevier and Brandon Ripley of Rice Memorial High School, David Bove of Burlington High School, and Clark Morrison of Milton High School each made significant contributions to the teamís superb final 2000 season record of 33-7, and

Whereas, head coach Perry Bove, the St. Michaelís College head baseball coach, assistant coach Ted Shipley, who is also the head coach at Castleton State College, and pitching coach Len Whitehouse, who similarly coaches at St. Michaelís College, were inspirational leaders who expertly and wisely guided the team, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the players and coaches of the 2000 Vermont Championship Essex American Legion team on completing a stunning season of exciting baseball play, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Joe Sadler, President of Essex Legion Baseball and Rodney Myers, Commander of American Legion Post 91 in Winooski.
