NO. R-105. JOINT RESOLUTION honoring the Vermont National Guardís management of the 43rd Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Ski Championships.

Whereas, the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) is an international organization that encourages military sports programs, and seeks to develop friendly relations among the armed forces of its member nations, and

Whereas, a recent highlight of the CISM calendar was the 43rd World Military Ski Championships which occurred from March 6-11 in Vermont under the auspices of the Vermont National Guard, and

Whereas, the 438 participating athletes, coaches and delegation members represented a total of 18 nations, including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States, and

Whereas, nearly 500 national guard and civilian personnel from several states, including Vermont, provided support services, and

Whereas, many businesses generously sponsored the various events, and

Whereas, the featured skiing-related sports at the championships included biathlon, which entails cross-country skiing combined with rifle marksmanship; a 50-gate giant slalom; cross-country courses of 15 kilometers for men and 10 kilometers for women; and military patrol, a unique CISM team biathlon event, and

Whereas, the Nordic events were conducted at the EAFR firing range in Jericho, and the alpine activities were held at the Stowe Mountain Resort, and

Whereas, a highlight of the week was the participation of over 1,000 students representing a dozen Vermont schools, including Essex Technical Center, Camels Hump Middle School, Colchester High School, Mt. Mansfield Union High School, Founders Memorial School, Essex Middle School, John F. Kennedy Middle School, Underhill ID Elementary, Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School, Underhill Central School, Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax and Jericho Elementary School who adopted and cheered for teams from various nations and met with the athletes, and

Whereas, the Vermont National Guard, under the outstanding leadership of Major Richard A. Lizzari, was a magnificent host for this very special international conclave of military athletes, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates the Vermont National Guard for the outstanding role it played in organizing and hosting CISMís 43rd World Military Ski Championships, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Vermont Adjutant General Martha T. Rainville, Colonel Edward C. OíNeill, Colonel John R. Strifert, Colonel Alan L. Nye, Major Richard A. Lizzari of the Vermont National Guard, and Henry Lunde, President of the Stowe Mountain Ski Resort.
