NO. R-99. JOINT RESOLUTION thanking Vermont’s state and local highway crews and related personnel for extraordinary emergency service during the winter of 2001.

(J.R.H. 70)

Offered by: House Committee on Transportation.

Whereas, many Vermonters believed that the gigantic snowstorms of yore had receded into nearly legendary status, and

Whereas, despite this perception, on the days preceding the 2001 Town Meeting Day, many parts of Vermont received the most substantial continuous March snowfall in decades, and

Whereas, this extensive white precipitation required the Agency of Transportation, the municipalities’ road crews, and the highway information staff at the Department of Public Safety to devote many extra hours, including overnight shifts, to plowing the state’s and towns’ highways and keeping the public informed concerning current road conditions, and

Whereas, this important public service endeavor ensures that the state’s and towns’ road networks are passable as quickly as possible for emergency purposes, and then, soon thereafter, sufficiently clear for Vermonters to resume their regular daily activities, and

Whereas, while the road and public information crews are accustomed to extra storm-related work during the winter season, their responsibilities this year have greatly exceeded the typical amount of plowing and information dissemination duties, and

Whereas, the road crews and Department of Public Safety personnel across the state performed this challenging task professionally, efficiently, and promptly, and

Whereas, all Vermonters are greatly indebted to the extra special work of the state and municipal road crews and the Department of Public Safety informational personnel during the cold and dark winter days and nights, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly expresses its sincere appreciation to the state and local highway crews and the Department of Public Safety informational personnel who so magnificently kept our highways passable and kept us informed during the very snowy winter of 2001, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Secretary of Transportation Brian Searles, Commissioner of Public Safety James Walton, Commissioner of Personnel Patricia McDonald and to Steve Jeffrey, Executive Director of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns.
