NO. R-83. JOINT RESOLUTION congratulating Donald E. Webster on his centennial birthday.

Whereas, Donald E. Webster was born in Bennington on March 10, 1901, and

Whereas, during his matriculation through the former Bennington High School, he wrote a research paper on the Sultan of Turkey that would have a far more profound influence on his future career than he could ever have envisioned, and

Whereas, Donald E. Webster earned his undergraduate degree at Oberlin College and a graduate degree from Columbia University, and

Whereas, before commencing his illustrious career as an academic and United States Foreign Service Officer, he studied at the Hartford Theological Seminary and was ordained a minister in the Congregational Church, and

Whereas, upon completing his studies, Donald E. Webster became a professor of sociology at Beloit College in Wisconsin, and

Whereas, drawing on both his scholarly training, and harkening back to his pivotal high school essay, Donald E. Webster wrote a seminal book, "Turkey of Ataturk: Social Process in the Turkish Reformation," the first modern social science study which examined the post-Ottoman Empire Republic of Turkey, and

Whereas, Donald E. Websterís expertise and intimate knowledge of the Turkish government, so impressed our nationís leadership, that at the outbreak of World War II, he was appointed chief of the Turkey desk at the Office of Strategic Services, and

Whereas, in 1943, he joined the United States Foreign Service and was assigned to our embassy in Ankara, where he became the first United States cultural attaché outside the western hemisphere, and

Whereas, Donald E. Websterís foreign service assignments subsequently took him to Iran and Taiwan, and

Whereas, since retiring to California, he has served as an expert resource on a video about Ataturk that was honored at the Cannes Film Festival, and

Whereas, an active golfer until the age of 95, Donald E. Webster is proud of his Vermont bred frugality and always insisted on carrying his own golf bag, and

Whereas, even as a near centurion, he continues to read aloud to the blind, and he recently completed the reading of an 800 page book, and

Whereas, on Saturday March 10, 2001, Donald E. Websterís daughters Jane and Deborah, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other relatives, including his Vermont bred niece, Susan Chamberlain, nephews Representative Donald Webster of Brattleboro, and Harris Webster of Montpelier, a State House tour guide, will gather in California to pay honor to the Webster clanís esteemed senior patriarch, now therefore be it

 

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is delighted to congratulate, Bennington native Donald E. Webster on the wonderful occasion of his centennial birthday.
