NO. R-72. JOINT RESOLUTION in memory of Montpelier High School Coach Lenny Drew.

Offered by: Representatives Brooks of Montpelier, Kitzmiller of Montpelier and Jordan of Middlesex.

Whereas, a revered high school athletic coach and teacher is a very special individual, and

Whereas, Levi "Lenny" Drew, known to one and all at Montpelier High School as "Coach," was greatly admired and respected, and

Whereas, for over two decades, Coach Drew epitomized good sportsmanship in the Montpelier High School basketball program, and

Whereas, the coach first played competitive basketball at Bradford Academy, and

Whereas, after graduation from Bradford Academy, he temporarily heeded the famous call to "go west, young man," and earned his bachelorís and masterís degrees at the University of Notre Dame, and

Whereas, after fulfilling his military obligation, Coach Drew returned home to Vermont and began an illustrious teaching and interscholastic coaching career, and

Whereas, before starting his 20 plus year tenure at his true home, Montpelier High School, Coach Drew held teaching and coaching positions at Williamstown High School, Lyndon State College and St. Johnsbury Academy, and

Whereas, although Coach Drew had officially retired, he continued his association with Montpelier High School as the golf coach, and he was eagerly anticipating instructing his team on the fine points of driving and putting during the 2001 interscholastic season, and

Whereas, his love of golf was further apparent as he was a member of both the Vermont and United States Golf associations, and

Whereas, when not coaching, or on the golfing green, Coach Drew was an avid gardener, and belonged to several civic and fraternal organizations, and

Whereas, he was married to his wife Marion for 44 years, and they were the parents of six sons, Brian, Shawn, Kevin, Dennis, Thomas and Timothy, two daughters, Kathleen and Colleen, and were also the very proud grandparents of 16 grandchildren, and

Whereas, Coach Drewís passing leaves Montpelier High School bereft of a very special teacher, coach, advisor and friend, and

Whereas, his memory will be especially cherished by Montpelier High Schoolís students, alumni, faculty and staff, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly expresses its sincere condolences to the family of Coach "Lenny" Drew on his passing, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Marion Drew in Montpelier.
