NO. R-46. JOINT RESOLUTION in memory of Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Normand Hiser.

Whereas, Elizabeth Hiser was raised in Dumont, New Jersey, and moved to Vermont after completing a bachelorís degree in English literature at the University of Rhode Island, and

Whereas, upon moving to Vermont, Betsy, as she was known to her close friends, completed a masterís degree in Human Nutrition & Foods from the University of Vermont, and

Whereas, she served as the Research Dietitian for 10 years in the Clinical Research Center at the University of Vermont, and

Whereas, Betsy went on to become the founding Health and Nutrition Editor of "Eating Well Magazine," in Charlotte, Vermont, where she eventually moved, and

Whereas, she contributed extensively as an editor and author to numerous professional journals, and

Whereas, she was an instructor in the University of Vermontís cardiac rehabilitation program for over 10 years, and

Whereas, she authored the highly-regarded book, "The Other Diabetes: Living Well and Eating Well with Type 2 Diabetes," in 1999, and

Whereas, Betsy received the coveted Media Excellence Award in 1998 from the American Dietetic Association, the Science Journalism Award from the Institute of Food Technologists in 1995, and the Vermont Dietetics Association Pyramid Award for individuals who have made a significant contribution to the health of Vermonters by promoting healthy eating habits, and

Whereas, she demonstrated a personal commitment to nutrition and fitness and was featured regularly on television in CNNís show, On the Menu, and

Whereas, her untimely death leaves an immeasurable void in her family and in the professional community of the Vermont Dietetic Association, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly celebrates the lifetime achievements of Betsy Hiser who will be long remembered and missed, and be it further

Resolved: That the General Assembly extends its sincere condolences to the family of Betsy Hiser, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to her husband, John, and her daughter, Jessica, and sons, Peter and Will.
