ACT NO. 16
Education; American Sign Language; foreign language credit
This act authorizes schools to offer American Sign Language (ASL) as a course of study; directs the commissioner of education to develop a plan to encourage educators to seek endorsement as teachers of ASL; directs the state board of education to establish licensing standards for teachers of ASL; and directs the commissioner of education to encourage postsecondary institutions to accept secondary school ASL credits as foreign language credits and to offer ASL courses.
Effective Date: July 1, 2001
