NO. R-312. JOINT RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE MONTHS OF SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER 2000 AS UNITED WAY MONTHS IN VERMONT.

Whereas, the United Way in Vermont is a vital funding source for numerous worthy direct institutional, and ultimately individual, recipients, and

Whereas, in Vermont, the ten separate regional nonprofit fundraising corporations include the United Ways of Addison County, Bennington County, Chittenden County, Franklin and Grand Isle Counties, Rutland County, Lamoille County, Southern Windsor County, the Upper Valley, Windham County, and the Green Mountain United Way, which serves the counties of Washington, Orange, Essex, Orleans and Caledonia, and

Whereas, over 200 local and very diverse charitable and federally tax exempt organizations related to sheltering the homeless and creating new affordable housing opportunities; treating both physical and mental health maladies and providing hospice care; providing opportunities for young persons through programs such as Head Start and the Girl Scouts; restoring damaged domestic relationships and protecting and rehabilitating those who have been under emotional or physical stress as the result of such relationships; assisting senior citizens with home-based meals and other essential home and community-based services; and preserving Vermont’s agricultural and forest lands for future generations, are among the many United Way beneficiaries, and

Whereas, over 300,000 individual Vermonters benefit from the services of these organizations, and

Whereas, in 1999, the Vermont based United Way agencies raised over $7.5 million, and

Whereas, from September 1 through November 30, 2000, the United Way organizations in Vermont will be conducting their annual fundraising campaigns, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly supports the outstanding work of the United Ways in Vermont, and encourages all Vermonters to be generous when called upon to contribute, and be it further

Resolved: That the months of September, October and November 2000 are designated as United Way Months in Vermont, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to each of the 10 United Ways in Vermont.
