NO. R-298. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE BELLOWS FALLS UNION HIGH SCHOOL TERRIERS ON WINNING THE 2000 DIVISION II GIRLS’ BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

(J.R.H. 236)

Offered by: Representatives Partridge of Windham, Darrow of Dummerston, Deen of Westminster and Obuchowski of Rockingham.

Whereas, the Bellows Falls Union High School Terriers Girls’ Basketball Team had determinedly dribbled for the last 11 years in hopes of repeating their 1989 victorious championship season, and

Whereas, the 1999-2000 season marked not only a new millennium, but a special opportunity for the girl Terriers to once again reign supreme on the hardwood court, and

Whereas, this powerful team was ranked number one in Division II, with a superb seasonal performance of 20 victories and only three defeats, as the Terriers entered the final contest at Barre Auditorium against the same opponent as in the 1989 finale, the second-ranked Fair Haven Union High School Slaters, and

Whereas, the purple gang, as the Terriers are affectionately known, played an outstanding defensive strategy, earning a well-deserved 37-20 Terrier victory, and limiting the Slaters to the lowest point total ever scored by a team in a Vermont girls’ basketball championship game, and

Whereas, significant contributors to the Terriers’ triumph were the amazing ninth-grade Rayner sisters: Jevy, a defensive wizard, and Dani, who scored the game’s opening eight points, and at the conclusion of the first half, tossed another five points into the basket, breaking a 14-14 tie, and

Whereas, co-captains Christina Holton, who scored ten points, and Tanya Chamberlin were truly great team leaders, and

Whereas, in recognition of the purple gang’s precision performance and disciplined play, the Terriers and the entire student body have been awarded the 2000 Vermont Principals’ Association Sportsmanship Award, and

Whereas, all of the Terriers, including Emma Harlow, Jena Coffey, Krystal Johnson, Syd Allen, Corey Olbrych and Maureen Furlong, were essential members of this championship squad, and

Whereas, the wise guidance of veteran coach Jayne Barber and her able assistant coach Russ Pickering was an essential factor in the Terriers’ victorious season and their grand finale, now therefore be it
