NO. R-297. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE BELLOWS FALLS UNION HIGH SCHOOL TERRIERS 2000 DIVISION II CHAMPIONSHIP BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM.

(J.R.H. 235)

Offered by: Representatives Partridge of Windham, Darrow of Dummerston, Deen of Westminster and Obuchowski of Rockingham.

Whereas, each year, the Bellows Falls Union High School Terriers Boys’ Basketball Team has impressively dribbled, passed and shot the large orange- colored ball on the hardwood courts of the state’s high schools, and

Whereas, since 1993, despite their superb efforts, they were unable to clinch a divisional title, and

Whereas, the 1999-2000 season marked not only a new millennium, but a dramatic turn in the Terriers’ fortunes, and

Whereas, in recognition of the purple gang’s precision performance and disciplined play, the Terriers and the entire student body have been awarded the 2000 Vermont Principals’ Association Sportsmanship Award, and

Whereas, the third-seeded, and certainly well-tested, 22 and 4 Terriers, were without question psychologically ready to tip off against their first-seeded rivals, the Montpelier Solons, for the 2000 Division II Championship, and

Whereas, although the first half was a closely matched contest in which the Terriers topped the Solons 29-26, the conclusion of the second half proved to be an even more thrilling contest that served as the prelude to a decisive overtime period, and

Whereas, facing a five-point deficit, with a score of 54-49, and only four minutes and 32 seconds remaining in regulation play, Terriers’ Judd Adams’s three-point play in combination with Brendon Ladd’s two-point one-on-one shots tied the game at 54-all, which was the score at the sounding of the buzzer as regulation play concluded, and

Whereas, as the overtime play commenced, the fouling of Terrier Colby Goodrich provided the first two points, and although the Solons soon retied the score, the Terriers held a very narrow 62-61 lead with 58 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, and

Whereas, the Terriers’ success on the free throw line in the remaining seconds enabled the boys from Bellows Falls to win the game 65-61 and clinch the Division II Championship, and

Whereas, this exciting playoff finale typified a great basketball season for all of the basketball Terriers, including Barry Chamberland, Jarod Batchelder, Trevor Ramsey, Chris Eno, Nick Managan, Ian Aldridge, Jake Quinney and Dan Smith, who were greatly assisted by equipment mangers Peter Frink and Mark Frink, and

Whereas, the Terriers received the coveted Tournament Sportsmanship Award for their division, and

Whereas, Coach Bill Murphy and Assistant Coaches Joe James, John Hollar and Kevin Hicks, along with the able assistance of equipment coaches Peter and Mark Frink, have demonstrated their great basketball skills in leading the Terriers to this well-earned 2000 Division II Boys’ Basketball Championship, now therefore be it
