NO. R-277. JOINT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING DONALD M. WALKER ON RECEIVING THE MONTPELIER ROTARY CLUB'S 2000 DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD.

Offered by: Senator Doyle of Washington County, Senator Cummings of Washington County and Senator Spaulding of Washington County.

Whereas, the Montpelier Rotary Club annually conveys a Montpelier Distinguished Citizen of the Year award, and

Whereas, this year’s recipient, Donald M. Walker, and his wife, Audrey have been married for over 51 years, and are the parents of three children and the grandparents of seven grandchildren, and

Whereas, an automobile dealer for over 40 years, Don joined his father in the family business in 1951, and

Whereas, he initially established a used car dealership in Center Rutland, known as Walker Motors, Inc., and moved to Montpelier in 1953 as a franchised Ford dealership, and

Whereas, Don Walker has represented Ford dealers on industry committees, including a legislative activity panel in Washington, D.C., and

Whereas, he also represented his fellow Washington County dealers on the state association board for many years, and

Whereas, from 1994 through 1998, Don served as facilitator for the Vermont Automobile Dealers Association Consumer Complaint Mediation Program, and

Whereas, early on, Don demonstrated a penchant for service beyond his own business to his industry and most impressively to his community, and

Whereas, his passion for sports is reflected in coaching Montpelier hockey and baseball, scoring for Spaulding High’s boys’ basketball for 18 years and Montpelier High School boys and girls for 10 years, and

Whereas, Don has served as an official scorer for the Barre high school athletic tournaments for nearly 500 consecutive games, and

Whereas, Don founded the Montpelier High School Booster Club in 1971, and he served as President for three years, and

Whereas, the local American Red Cross and American Cancer Society chapters have benefited from his leadership on fund drives, and

Whereas, he has served as a trustee of the Central Vermont Medical Center for 25 years, the past two as Chairman of the Board, and

Whereas, he chaired the Medical Center’s planning committee which was instrumental in creating an affiliation with the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Alliance, and

Whereas, Don readily admits that his wife Audrey’s participation and support has significantly contributed to his successful service, now therefore

be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Donald M. Walker on winning the Montpelier Rotary Club’s 2000 Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Don Walker in Montpelier.
