Whereas, Stephen James proudly continued his family's long tradition of leadership in the dairy industry and the civic affairs of his home community of Weybridge, and

Whereas, after graduating from Middlebury High School and serving honorably in the United States Navy, in 1952 he entered the family dairy business, Monument Farms Dairy, of which he eventually assumed the presidency with great success, and

Whereas, as a 12-year veteran of the Agway Board of Directors, Stephen James assisted in the promotion and management of dairy marketing far beyond the contours of his own farm, and

Whereas, his interest in promoting sound agricultural practices extended overseas when in 1991, he traveled to Russia as an agricultural ambassador, and

Whereas, as a sixth generation Weybridge resident, Stephen James enthusiastically assumed many leadership roles as a municipal public official, including selectboard member, fence viewer and president of the Weybridge Cemetery Association, and

Whereas, during his tenure as Weybridge School Board chair, the town constructed its first multiple classroom building, and

Whereas, as a businessman in Addison County whose advice was eagerly sought, Stephen James served for three decades as a director of the National Bank of Middlebury, including a recent term as chair of the bank's board, and was honored by his fellow Rotarians when he was elected president of the Middlebury Rotary Club, and

Whereas, he was a devoted member of the Weybridge Congregational Church and was actively involved in the congregation's activities, and

Whereas, his death leaves a void in the life of the Weybridge community, particularly for his loving wife Agnes, his daughter Linnea, sons Peter and Robert and his eight grandchildren, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly extends its condolences to the family of Stephen James, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to his widow Agnes James in Weybridge.
