NO. R-214. JOINT RESOLUTION IN MEMORY OF FORMER REPRESENTATIVE MERRITT L. THOMAS.

Whereas, Merritt L. Thomas was a prominent resident of Rutland Town who was widely respected in his community, and
Whereas, after graduating from Rutland High School, he joined his family's business, Thomas Dairy, where he remained for over 40 years and served as vice president, and
Whereas, he pursued his agricultural interests as an active member of the Vermont Farm Bureau and as a soil conservation supervisor, and
Whereas, Merritt L. Thomas was a director of the First Vermont Bank, and
Whereas, he was a publicly spirited individual having held the position of Lister in Rutland Town for a decade, and
Whereas, building on his municipal and private sector experience, Merritt L. Thomas stood for election to the House of Representatives, and the voters of Rutland Town, having great confidence in his wise judgment, elected him to the legislature for three consecutive terms, and
Whereas, his civic memberships included both the Elks and the Rutland Rotary Club, and
Whereas, for 52 years Merritt L. Thomas was the husband of the former Natalie Woodman, and they were the parents of six daughters, Susan, Catherine, Barbara, Jennifer, Carol and Kimberly and a son, John, as well as the proud grandparents of 13 grandchildren, and
Whereas, his presence will be greatly missed by both his family and his many friends in the Rutland area, now therefore be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:
That the General Assembly extends its deepest condolences to the family of former Representative Merritt L. Thomas of Rutland Town, and be it further
Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Natalie Thomas of Rutland Town.
