NO. R-198. JOINT RESOLUTION WISHING FAREWELL TO, AND CONGRATULATING, REPRESENTATIVE MATTHEW BAILEY DUNNE OF HARTLAND ON HIS DEPARTURE FOR WASHINGTON, D.C. TO BECOME DIRECTOR OF AMERICORPS VISTA.

Whereas, a young lad named Matt Dunne, a studious scholar at the Hartland Elementary School, once accompanied his father on a momentous journey to the State House in Montpelier, and

Whereas, though not yet tutored in the intricacies of the political process, this bright and articulate youngster immediately realized he had seen his future home, and that when he was older and wiser, he would become a citizen legislator known for his thoughtfulness and rhetorical eloquence, and

Whereas, upon graduating with honors from Brown University, Matt immediately returned home to pursue his boyhood dream of serving in the Vermont General Assembly, and

Whereas, despite the odds, he impressed his Hartland and West Windsor neighbors and was elected for the first of four terms to the House of Representatives, and

Whereas, Matt served his apprenticeship as Clerk of the Committee on Government Operations and then assumed the important responsibilities of Vice-Chair of the Committee on Transportation, and

Whereas, never one to fear that he was too young for a challenging task, at the age of 29 he was elected by his fellow Democrats as the Assistant Majority Leader, and

Whereas, among Matt's accomplishments as a member of the General Assembly was his role in the establishment of Amtrak's Vermonter train and the Vermont Film Commission, and

Whereas, remembering the enormous satisfaction that he felt as a summer youth volunteer, and seeking to bring his Vermont-based citizenship values to the rest of the nation, he has accepted an appointment as Director of AmeriCorps Vista in Washington D.C., and

Whereas, although he is moving to our nation's capital, Matt's home will always be in Vermont, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly bids farewell to the member from Hartland, Representative Matthew Bailey Dunne, and wishes him success and happiness as he assumes his new duties in our nation's capital city, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Representative Dunne's mother, Faith Dunne, in Hartland.
