NO. R-194. JOINT RESOLUTION TO HONORING THE ROUND TABLE OF UNITY, INC.'S OUTSTANDING EFFORTS TO FOSTER IMPROVED RACIAL AND ETHNIC HARMONY AND UNDERSTANDING IN SOUTHERN VERMONT.

Whereas, Round Table of Unity, Inc. (RTU) was chartered in October 1997 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of harmony and understanding between people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds in southern Vermont, and

Whereas, RTU's grassroots initiatives have awakened the residents of southern Vermont to the diverse racial and ethnic composition of their region, and

Whereas, the pioneering programs offered by RTU provide Vermonters a special opportunity to learn about, and better appreciate, the culture and customs of their neighbors, and

Whereas, RTU has offered an interesting combination of programs intended to enlighten the community concerning the importance of racial and ethnic cooperation, including a "Healing of Racism Dialogue" series that was cosponsored with the School of International Training and Landmark College, and a panel dialogue on racism that explored the topic, "Diversity Training: Mandatory in the Public Schools and the Workplace" from legal, political and economic perspectives, and

Whereas, RTU organized a visual arts exhibition, entitled "The Rainbow Garden: Celebrating Diversity" to illustrate the importance of cooperation among diverse communities in our society, and

Whereas, a special event for RTU is the annual "Relay Run for Racial Harmony," and

Whereas, in celebration of the life of America's most famous advocate for racial harmony, RTU will proudly host its second annual Martin Luther

King, Jr. Day Awards Breakfast on Monday, January 17 at the Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro, and

Whereas, RTU's executive director Aundrie Robinson has provided dynamic and innovative leadership on behalf of the organization, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly recognizes the creative and productive leadership role that the Round Table of Unity, Inc. has assumed in its campaign to improve racial tolerance and understanding in southern Vermont, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Aundrie Robinson in Brattleboro.
